Fontbonne Academy strives to deliver a challenging academic program in a caring atmosphere, designed so that students can mature academically, spiritually, socially, physically, and emotionally. The faculty at Fontbonne Academy promises support along the way as a student grows in wisdom and grace and becomes, in the words of our alma mater, “a woman of courage, made strong.” Academic excellence is both the standard of accomplishment and the outcome of each student’s time at Fontbonne Academy—academic excellence as measured by her reach and her grasp.
Academic Success Program
The Academic Success Program is designed to assist students who have been identified as needing support with basic study skills. The goal of the program is to introduce and reinforce such skills as organization, time management, note taking, reading comprehension, and learning & memory tools, among others, through a dedicated study skills curriculum. Students are introduced to the concept of learning styles and are taught to identify and work with their own strengths. Participants in the Academic Success Program attend a week long summer session prior to entering grade nine. During the school year these students meet once a cycle in mentoring sessions during which study strategies for particular courses are addressed. Students also attend an after school program that meets twice a week and provides students access to subject area tutors as well as one-to-one mentoring with the Academic Success Program Coordinator.
Academic Success Center
The Academic Success Center (ASC) at Fontbonne Academy is a dedicated area that has been designed to support students as they work in a rigorous college preparatory environment. The Center is staffed by faculty who provide students with additional guidance in subject areas. Students can also meet individually in the ASC with National Honor Society tutors to receive extra help on specific subject area skills. Students requiring additional assistance have access to the Academic Success Program Coordinator who offers guidance and specific skill training in the area of study skills as well as consultation with teachers and parents pertaining to executive functioning skills.
In addition, other subject support centers are available to all students every day. These are staffed by faculty and peer tutors—juniors and seniors who have mastered the materials in each discipline.
