Garzon Named a Globe Foundation/Phelps Scholar-Athlete

Clarissa Garzon '20 has been named a 2020 Globe Foundation/Richard J. Phelps Scholar-Athlete. Garzon is one of 16 distinguished Scholar-Athletes to receive the honor.  The male and female recipients represent six MIAA districts, the city of Boston and Eastern Mass. preparatory schools.  They were selected by a panel of Globe editors from each district, based on academic and athletic prowess, official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and extra curricular activities, and work in the community. 

Garzon and the other unparalleled Scholar-Athletes were honored in a virtual ceremony on Tuesday, June 23rd.  Each student receives a $3,000 scholarship to their college destination.  Garzon will be attending Tufts University in the fall.

Garzon was a three-sport athlete during her career at Fontbonne.  She competed in Varsity Cross Country, Basketball and Track & Field.  She was named a Catholic Conference All- Star in both Cross Country and Basketball and was named a Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic in Basketball.

Garzon also set the bar high in the classroom.  A National Merit Scholar, she served as the Treasurer of the Fontbonne chapter of the National Honor Society and was a 2019 recipient of the Harvard Prize Book.  She was the 2019 winner of the Annual MIAA Student Sportsmanship Essay Contest and was named a state winner for the Heisman High School Scholarship.
