Fontbonne Teacher Honored With "Excellence in Education" Award

Fontbonne is proud to announce Ms. Elizabeth Pilla is one of only ten recipients of the prestigious Archdiocese of Boston "Excellence in Education" Award. This annual award honors elementary and secondary school teachers' commitment to developing saints and scholars in the Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Boston.

Ms. Pilla has served at Fontbonne for 20 years.  She is currently the Chairperson of the Social Studies Department.  Ms. Pilla co-teaches one of Fontbonne’s most popular Grade 12 classes; the interdisciplinary course, Liberty, Justice & Security.  The class was featured earlier this academic year on WCVB’s A Plus series.

Ms. Pilla has been a leader in developing Fontbonne’s Diversity Committee, Model UN Program and Academic Programming Committee.  “This is a most deserving award for Liz as she lives our mission and the mission of growing and developing both saints and scholars,” said Maura Spignesi, Head of School.  “She has volunteered countless hours to improve the educational experience at Fontbonne. Liz has been committed to not only innovative learning at Fontbonne but developing relationships with her students where they trust her and feel valued.”

Administrators, staff, pastors, parents and students across the Archdiocese were encouraged to nominate excellent teachers in their schools. Teachers who exhibit strong leadership qualities, Catholic values, academic excellence, and their commitment to their students as well as schools. “The honorees are the cream of the crop in terms of faculty members. This is a very impressive group,” said Thomas Carroll, Catholic Schools Office Superintendent. “It's remarkable how well schools have pivoted from live instruction to remote learning. It’s astonishing the level of speed at high we were able to pivot, to do something that very few people were trained to do."

All ten honorees were celebrated in an online meeting with the Catholic Schools Office on April 28, 2020. They will each receive $1,500 and have been invited to a September luncheon with Cardinal Sean O’Malley.  Join us in congratulating Ms. Pilla!
