Peer Education

Moderators: Mrs. Maura Lamadore-Spignesi and Sr. Maryann Enright

Description

This is a program in which students are trained to assist other students. The members of Peer Education are selected after an application and interview process. Sophomores are eligible to be peer mentors. Only juniors and seniors may be peer mediators and peer educators. The selection process takes place in the spring for the following school year.

The Peer Education Program consists of three main components: mentors, mediators, and educators.

Mediation

All Junior and senior peer educators are trained as peer mediators. These students work throughout the year responding to peer mediation requests made from administrators, teacher and students themselves. They handle the mediations and help their peers resolve conflicts with their friends.

Education

All Junior and Senior Peer Educators work with the ninth grade students in group guidance classes. The lesson plans are centered on teen issues. The lessons include topics such as: Peer Mediation, Handling Teacher Conflicts, Healthy Relationships, Bullying and Harassment, Internet Bullying, Influence of Media, Peer Pressure and Sexual Activity. The peer educators also run school wide programs such as Mix It Up Day, a program to promote diversity, and Women of the World, a program to educate the young women about influential women in society.

Mentoring (Mrs. Cerasuolo)

All Sophomore Peer Educators work with the ninth grade students in homeroom. Their purpose is to work with the ninth grade students and foster a sense of inclusiveness within the school community. The mentors encourage students to get involved in extra curricular activities and act as a resource for Freshwomen. The mentors will help students who are having a hard time adjusting to the school community by being a friend to the student.
