Description
La Société Honoraire de Français de l’Académie Fontbonne, also known as The French Honor Society, was founded at Fontbonne Academy in 2004. The Society recognizes Fontbonne students’ high achievement in the study of the French language, and provides an outlet for top students to share French language and culture with the wider school community.
To be eligible for membership, a student must have achieved and maintained at least an average of B in an Honors level French course, or B+ in a regular level French course, as well as an overall GPA of 3.0 for three consecutive semesters. Students must also have given evidence of good character, leadership, dedication, seriousness of purpose, and a commitment to service. Students are inducted for one year of membership, and will be re-evaluated yearly. Invitations are typically issued during the third term of a student's sophomore year, or during a student's fourth semester of French language study.
Acceptance of membership includes a commitment to an active role in helping run Fontbonne’s annual International Night both in preparation before the event and during it, as well as Massachusetts Foreign Language Week activities, such as the Fontbonne Foreign Film Festival.
Recent Society activities include assisting in planning and preparation for International Night, the International Night performance of a traditional Quebecois folk dance, helping to create a French Cafe for the International Buffet, and participation in a French-immersion art tour of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. For Massachusetts Foreign Language Week, the Society publicized and hosted the 3rd Fontbonne Foreign Film Festival , administered the International Homeroom Triva Contest, and played international music for Fontbonne Foreign Music Friday. Every year, the French Honor Society collaborates with the Spanish Honor Society to prepare and conduct the honor societies' joint induction ceremony and reception. Future activities may include a French Scavenger Hunt in Boston, as well as tutoring for FBA French students.
The field trip to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, on Wednesday April 12, 2006 was hosted by the French Honor Society, and open to all French students. It was a 90 minute tour of the museum's collections given in French by a museum docent, including the special exhibit on Picasso, Monet, and Miro. Students spoke only French during their tour, and asked the guide all their questions in French.
