Health and Physical Education
All students are required to complete a minimum of .5 credits in Health and Physical Education in order to graduate.
Department PhilosophyThe Health and Physical Education curriculum has as its goal to help students integrate social, emotional, physical, and mental achievement. Physical education and sports build on all educational experiences at Fontbonne Academy and prepare the students for adulthood, maturity, responsibility, and concern for others. Health education offers students a framework for understanding personal wellness and well-being. Objectives:

CurriculumPhysical Education I The program for the Freshwomen includes the following activities:
Each unit of team sports introduced at this level consists of basic skills and individual instruction as
students are encouraged to progress at their own pace. At the 9th grade level vision tests and screening
for scoliosis are conducted as an aspect of our integrated health education program. Physical Education II The program for the Sophomores includes the following activities:
At the 10th grade level, health concerns such as the effects of body image on adolescent women, lifetime
fitness and nutrition are taught as an aspect of our integrated health program. Physical Education III/Health Issues The program for Juniors includes the following activities:
The Juniors meet once a cycle in the Wellness Center for a fitness workout and once a cycle for an
elective activity. More individual activities are introduced at the 11th grade level in the hope that students
will stay involved in some type of lifetime sport after they leave Fontbonne Academy. The importance of
fitness as a lifelong value is also stressed with its implications for promoting overall health and wellness.
Junior level Physical Education classes will include the presentation and discussion of relevant health
issues including: self-esteem, body image, nutrition, tobacco, club drugs, sexuality and relationships during
winter term. Physical Education IV Seniors meet in the Wellness Center once a cycle for one supervised fitness workout and are required to
complete two independent workouts per week on their own. Health Education Health Education will provide an avenue to explore current health issues, focusing on the physical, mental, and social wellness of the individual. Students will be presented with factual information and available resources. Freshwomen Health Education includes the following areas: Decision Making, Emotions, Problem Solving, Relationships, Reproduction, Self-Esteem, Stress, Tobacco, Wellness. Sophomore Health Education includes the following areas: Alcohol, Aids/Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Drugs, Fitness, Nutrition, Relationships, Women's Health Issues. |
