She
was the daughter of Irish immigrant farmers. She had a brother, Jimmy, who
had tuberculosis. Anne's mother died and her father became an alcoholic when
she was a kid. At the age of five Anne got trachoma which is a virus infecting
the eyes and it can cause blindness if it is not treated. The infection almost
left her blind. Two years later Anne's father abandoned Anne and her brother
to an orphanage in Tewksbury.
Anne didnt go to school until she was 14 years old. She eventually graduated
from the Perkins Institute for the blind in 1886. Her first job was with the
Keller family. She worked with the deaf, mute and, blind child, Helen Keller.
Helen was only seven years old, and horribly behaved when Anne arrived. Anne
taught Helen how to read and write the Braille alphabet. Anne finally went
blind.
