AP US History Syllabus (2006-2007)

Ms. Pilla

This course is open to Juniors who have taken Modern World History as Freshwomen and United States History I Honors as Sophomores and who meet department grade and writing skill expectations for AP work.  Chairperson approval is required.  The course fulfills the third year of the three year Social Studies graduation requirement (one year Modern World History, two years United States History).  The content begins with European exploration and settlement of the New World in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and ends with the present day.  Students take the national AP US History exam given in May as part of the course requirements.  The content and themes emphasized and listed below are tied to those recommended by the College Board for preparing for the AP US History exam.  The course requires extensive independent reading and study of both primary and secondary sources.  It is expected that students will participate fully in class discussions.  Tests and quizzes will contain both multiple choice and essay questions to mimic the AP exam.  Students take practice AP exams.  Writing assignments are both extensive and intensive and include DBQs (Document-Based Questions).
