Introduction: The process of altering composition of
food for the purpose of its absorption into the body is known as
digestion. Digestion depends on both the
endocrine and exocrine secretion and the controlled movement of food through
the tract for the purpose of absorption.
The purpose of the digestive system is to bring essential nutrients into
the internal environment so that they are available to each cell of the body. These functions include ingestion, digestion,
motility, absorption, and eleimation.
Objective:
- Discuss
generalized function of the digestive system.
- List
all components of the alimentary canal from mouth to anus, as well as, the
accessory organs of digestion that are located within, the
gastrointestinal tract.
- List
and describe structures of the mouth, including the tongue, teeth,
deciduous and permanent teeth, deglutition.
- Identify
the salivary glands and their function.
- Discuss
the stomach in terms of location, function, sphincters, glands, cells –
chief, parietal and mucus-producing ones
- Discuss
size, position and divisions of the small and large intestine
- Understand
the location and significance of the vermiform appendix
- Discuss
the structure and functions of the liver and gallbladder
- Describe
the pancreas and its functions
- Define
and compare mechanical and chemical digestion
- Explain
mastication
- Explain
the difference between peristalsis and segmentation
- List
and discuss important properties of digestive enzymes
- Know
the most important digestive juices and enzymes, food products each
digests, and the end products
- Discuss
the control of salivary, gastric, pancreatic, biliary, and intestinal
exocrine secretions

defecation and elimination.
