Human Reproduction - Chapter 31 & 32

Introduction:

The importance of normal reproductive system function is different from other organ systems. This system ensures the survival of the species rather than the survival of the individual. In both sexes, organs of the reproductive system function to allow for propagation of the species. Production of hormones allows for secondary sex characteristics to develop. Sexual maturity and the ability to reproduce occur at puberty. The male's reproductive system consists of organs whose functions are to produce, transfer, and introduce mature sperm into the female reproductive tract in order that fertilization takes place. The female reproductive system provides protection and nutrition to the developing offspring for several years after concerption, as well as, gametes that may unite with a male gamete to produce offspring.

Objectives:

1. To identify the essential and accessory organs of male and female reproductions.

2. To discuss the functions of male and female reproductive systems.

3. To understand spermatogenesis and oogenesis.

4. To know what a vasectomy is and tubal ligations.

5. To understand prostate cancer.

6. To understand what a circumcision is.

7. Discuss the composition and course of seminal fluid and semen.

8. T know the important hormones involved in proper functioning of the male and female reproductive systems.

9. The importance of breasts and how lactation is controlled.

10. To know and understand the ovarian and menstrual(endometrial) cycles and all phases.

11. To understand how the female reproductive cycles are controlled.(Fig. 32-14)p. 1145

12. To be able to explain and understand p. 1146 (Fig. 32-15)

13. To know the difference between menarche and menopause.

14. To know the importance of a pap smear.

15. HPV- To understand the various strains that may cause cervical cancer and the importance of Gardasil.
