Introductory Science
Supplies;
1. There is no textbook for this class.
2. Three ring binder for class-large enough to hold notes, syllabi, review sheets, lab reports, quizzes, and tests
.
Welcome to the Introductory Science class. I am looking forward to a very productive year. This class is primarily a lab course. We do have class discussions before and after a lab is completed, and I do introduce some concepts that are not in the text.
The following are my expectations of you.
1. You must bring your text and notebook to class.
2. If you are absent----
a. you are responsible for getting class notes from a classmate.
b. you are responsible for finding out what handouts were given to the
class and obtaining them from a classmate.
c.
it is your responsibility to make up a missed test on the Tuesday
Following your
absence in Room 208 at
absent the Monday immediately preceding make-up day) My major
tests are always announced ahead of time. Consequently, if you return
to school on the day of the test you must take the test. I am responsible for
proctoring the make-up tests. Quiz make-ups are dependent on the value
of the quiz.
d. for review day, you are not excused from taking the test.
e. because of travel
or extended vacations, you are responsible for
your
make-up work.
3. For the first semester, I will give a minimum amount of homework. You
will have to memorize information, such as symbols for the common
elements.. I will check your notebooks frequently, using the Notebook Rubric
as my guide
4.You will have to summarize one science article per quarter. I will assign the
article and I will work with you on the first summary. A summary rubric
must be attached to each article. Be sure that you review my page on plagiarism
before submitting your summary.
5. Laboratory reports are a very important part of this class. The expectations for
for lab reports are outlined in the Laboratory Report Rubric. We will
work together in the classroom on the first couple of reports, and once I
perceive that you are comfortable with the process, you will prepare the reports
at home. All lab reports must be submitted with a rubric attached Lab reports
are only accepted on lab day, and if it is not turned in on the due date, the grade
is recorded as 0%. If you are absent on the day the lab report is due, I will
accept the report the next lab day. If you are frequently absent on lab day, your
grade will reflect the absences.
6.
Any handouts you receive must be tightly guarded. I do not run off
extra copies. Save all your handouts, tests, quizzes, etc., so that you are ready for your midterm and final exams.
7. Although I am sure it is not necessary, I am going to remind you to respect
each other’s desire to learn and my desire to teach. If at any time I feel that a
student (or students) is (are) interfering with these processes, I will discipline
accordingly.
8.
I expect items to be passed in on the date and time
that I have indicated. I do not accept assignments after the date that it is
due and the grade is 0%.
Remember that informing me ahead of time is better than informing me as the
“thing” is being collected. You will always have time to complete your
assignments. I am always willing to
listen to what you have to say---ahead
of time.
9.
Interim reports must be signed by you and your
parent/guardian and submitted to me in a timely fashion.
Realizing that I have
some expectations for you, I think you should have some expectations of me. You
can expect me to:
1. try very hard to announce a major test at least a week in advance.
2. always have a review day. This (these) day(s) will consist of going over review sheets, and answering any questions. If I see that review sheets are not done, or you have no questions I just go o n to the next topic. Class time is too valuable and review days should not be another day of me lecturing and asking questions. This is your time to ask the questions.
3. not schedule review days before exams. What I generally do is tell you when to review a given topic, and then I expect you to come to class ready to ask me questions on the topic you should have reviewed. If there are no questions I continue teaching.
4. record the exact grade that you earned on each evaluation that you have submitted. I do not scale. If you have questions regarding a grade, please come and talk to me. I have been known to make mistakes---sometimes.
5. not lose any of your papers. I have never lost a paper. Sometimes a paper has been misplaced, but I have never lost one. If I don’t have a grade, it’s because I never saw it. If I don’t find it, I never received it.
6. post your grades on the Internet. I post the grades as quickly as possible. Your interim reports will also be posted. If you do not have a computer at home or if your parents want a paper copy it is your responsibility to get that for them.
7. establish extra help sessions during the regular school day. You will be scheduled into an extra help session, and your parents/guardians will be notified of the letter day, period, and location of the session. This information will be available on the web site.
8. have a rubric for evaluating such items as notebooks, lab reports, summaries, etc. The rubric tells you exactly what I am evaluating.

Please sign and return to me within a week of receiving the above information.
I have read, I understand, and I will comply with all of the above information.
