TECHNOLOGY LAB POLICIES

In order to ensure that the technology labs are properly maintained and in working order, faculty/staff and students using the labs should adhere to the following policies:

General

  1. The technology labs are to be used for technology-related tasks only.  The labs are not subject support centers for general study.
  2. No food or drink is permitted in the technology labs at any time.
  3. No furniture or equipment should be moved from its original location or removed from the lab.
  4. Chairs should never be brought in from other areas.
  5. Lab chairs should be returned to their original positions when leaving the labs.
  6. Chalk, white out, markers, and paper cutting are not allowed in the labs since these can damage the equipment.
  7. Work in the computer labs is frequently a collaborative activity; however, interaction and conversation must not disturb others working in the labs.

Students

  1. The equipment in the technology labs is intended to support classroom learning.  All other uses are forbidden.
  2. Eating, drinking, littering, using personal email, instant messaging, playing games, aimlessly cruising the Internet, entering chat rooms, reading or composing web logs, downloading programs, or vandalizing the computer equipment in any way will result in a detention.  Serious offenses will have more serious consequences.
  3. Students may be allowed to use email to send assignment documents to and from school with a teacher’s permission and supervision.
  4. Students should not attempt to insert disks with broken clips into machines.
  5. All equipment failures or problems must be reported to the supervising adult in the lab.
  6. Students are not allowed to play music in the labs unless they use their own headphones so as not to disturb others.  Music can only be played with teacher permission while the student is working on an assignment at the same time.
  7. Only students who are working on a specific technology assignment for a class are allowed to stay in the lab under adult supervision.

Teachers

  1. Teachers must be familiar with the above policies and must enforce the consequences with all students.
  2. Any teacher who wishes to use a lab in upper or lower campus must request the lab through the Instructional Technology Specialist (ITS).  Specific instructions will be given for signing up in the various labs.
  3. Teachers must sign up for the lab by the end of classes the previous day.  A lab schedule for the next day will be made out at the end of each day,
  4. If a teacher is not going to use the lab on a given day, he/she must notify the ITS immediately.
  5. Students must never be left alone in the labs.

    • VHS students have permission to use labs when they have free periods and are scheduled into the room.
    • Art students can go into the CRC to print items since the art teacher can supervise them from next door.
  6. Lab doors should be locked at all times when there is no adult present in the room.
  7. Report all problems and equipment failures to the Technology Department member in charge of the lab as soon as possible.

Technology Staff

  1. Labs need to be cleaned and maintained on a daily basis at the end of each day. Work study students will be provided, but an overall check by the adult in charge of the lab should be done as well.
