Course Title:  Short Story and Novel

Overview:  Through the study of the short story and the novel, this course aims to develop your critical thinking skills, your appreciation of serious fiction, your ability to write a cogent articulate essay, and your confidence that you will be prepared for the next level of your education. To gain knowledge of cultures of the non-Western world  authors may propose unfamiliar values and traditions.  Consequently, your horizons should expand as we appreciate the techniques writers use to develop their ideas and themes. 

 

Teacher Expectations:

ü      Come to class on time with proper book, notebook, and pen; if you do not have your book, you will be retained after school.

ü      Complete homework assignments; read carefully and thoughtfully.

ü      Plan ahead to complete writing assignments; avail yourself of Fontbonne resources and seek help with your first drafts.

ü      Work to the best of your ability; you will succeed with persistent determination.

ü      Avoid all forms of plagiarism.

ü      Communicate with me about any extended absences or issues that may affect your performance.

 

Grading:

ü      There will be a point value for each assignment; points normally range from 30 to 200.

ü      Quizzes:  Quizzes will assess your reading homework; be prepared for DAILY unannounced reading quizzes.

ü      Essays are usually valued at 200 points.  Each essay assignment will have written directions and announced point value.

ü      A late paper will lose ten points for each day it is late.

ü      Grades will be posted on line frequently.     

 

Classroom Policies:

ü      School policies regarding uniform, tardiness to class, plagiarism, student and teacher absences will be enforced. (Reminder:  teacher absence:  complete assignment on your own and place in folder before 2:10 P.M. to receive credit.)

ü      Thursday is English make-up day--room 302 U at 2:15 P.M.
