Course Title: Masterworks of Literature Honors

Instructor: Ms. Ryan (email: bryan@fontbonneacademy.org)

Overview:  The literary canon is a much debated topic amongst scholars. What makes a work of literature worthy of the honorable title of “classic”?  Students in this course will analyze various works of literature to determine what common elements make literature timeless.  Critical analysis, the ability to express ideas both verbally and in writing, and the willingness to think independently are essential to the success of the student.

Expectations:

            I expect you to:

ü      Respect the ideas and learning process of our class.

ü      Complete all assignments on time.

ü      Come to class on time, prepared with all proper materials.  Be in your seat when the bell rings.  The consequence for tardiness is detention. The consequence for arriving unprepared is retention.

ü      Put forth your best effort at all times, including class discussion.

ü      Maintain the integrity of your work.  Do not plagiarize.

ü      Communicate with me about your absences and any other issues related to our class.

            You can expect me to:

ü      Respect your integrity as a student by maintaining high expectations and by upholding the policies of the school.

ü      Return your work in a timely manner.

ü      Communicate with you and your parents regarding your grade and behavior in class.

Grading: Your grade will be based on the following types of assignments:

ü      Tests: Generally you will take a test after the completion of a unit/major work. On some occasions, a project may be assigned instead of a test.

ü      Quizzes: Quizzes will assess your knowledge of your reading and vocabulary. Please be prepared for DAILY reading quizzes.

ü      Essays/papers

ü      Homework: Most of your daily homework assignments will come in the form of reading. Understanding and demonstrating the ability to thoughtfully respond to what you have read is essential to your success in the class.

ü      Outside Reading: Each quarter, you will read one outside reading book.

**You will know the point value for each assignment prior to its due date.  Point values will

normally range from ten to two hundred points.

**Late papers will lose ten points for each day it is late, including Saturday and Sunday.

Classroom Policies:

ü      We will adhere to all school policies regarding uniform, tardiness to class, plagiarism, student and teacher absences, and make-ups.

ü      Make Up:  All make-up tests and quizzes will be given in 302u on Thursdays at 2:15. Failure to make up a test/quiz will result in a zero.

ü      Bathroom: Only one person may leave the class at a time. Please sign-out and record the correct time.  You may not use the bathroom during the first five or last five minutes of class.  Please be respectful of your classmates and teacher when leaving and entering the room.
