American Legion Legacy Scholarship
Deadline: April 15th
The amount and number of awards depends upon the income derived from the trust. Eligibility requirements say that you must be a child (biological or adopted) of active duty US military and guard, and reserve personnel who were federalized and died on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001. American Planning Association (NEW)
Deadline: Jan. 15th
APA is offering a first place prize of a $5,000 scholarship. The essay assignment is “Creating a Green Neighborhood Plan” and must be between 1200 and 1500 words. For more information on the topic and guidelines and to apply, visit www.planning.org/institutions/hsessay.htm

Brandy Murphy Scholarship
Deadline: April 30th
$6,500, which may be divided amongst several applicants, is given to assist students in pursuing their dream of obtaining higher education. All majors are eligible. You are asked to write an essay explaining how a high school course has influenced your life. Educational Communications Scholarship Foundation
Deadline: May 15th
Over $150,000 provided in 111 scholarships annually. Semifinalists will receive notification in October, January, March and May. Students can apply annually. Applications received after deadline will be processed and evaluated for the following year scholarship award program. Elks National Foundation Scholarships
Deadline: Jan. 11th
Awarding 500 four year scholarships, ranging from $1,000 per year to $15,000 per year. Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks. Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need. Applications can be downloaded at www.elks.org/enf/scholars/mvs.cfm

“The Fountainhead” Essay Contest
Deadline: April 25th
The Ayn Rand Institute is giving one $10,000, five $2,000, ten $1,000, forty-five $100, and one-hundred and seventy-five $50 scholarships for essays which demonstrate an outstanding grasp of the philosophic and psychological meaning of The Fountainhead. Choice of three topics to write about. For the list of topics and how to send essay, see guidance department.

Future Leadership Awards (NEW)
Deadline: Feb. 1st
The Boston chapter of the National Association of Asian-American Professionals is awarding merit and need-based scholarships to HS seniors of Asian descent. Interested candidates must fill out application, including essays, and send transcript, SAT scores, 2 letter of recommendation and a copy of the FAFSA by deadline. Applications are available online at www.naaapboston.org or in guidance.

The Gates Millennium Scholars
Deadline: Dec. 31st
For outstanding, low income, African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students. Applicants must be citizen or legal permanent resident of the US, have GPA of 3.3 or higher (unweighted), and have financial need. Applicant must complete and submit nominee form, nominator form and recommender form by the deadline, if applying online deadline in Jan. 11. For paper application see Ms. Terilli. Girl Scout Achievement Award
Deadline: Feb. 10th
$1,000 scholarship and trip to Arizona for ALA National Convention. Must have earned Girl Scout Gold award, be actively involved in a religious institute and must have received the appropriate religious emblem at the Cadette or Senior Scout Level. Application must include one letter of recommendation and essay describing your Gold Award project. Girls Going Places Award Program (NEW)
Deadline: Feb. 15th
A total of $30,000 will be awarded to girls who demonstrate budding entrepreneurship; are taking the first steps toward financial independence; making a difference in their schools and communities. Entries must include application, 250-word personal statement, and 750-word letter of recommendation. Official rule and applications available in guidance or online at www.GirlsGoingPlaces.com

Henry David Thoreau Scholarship Foundation
Deadline: Feb. 1st
Undergraduate scholarship totaling up to $30,000, usually distributed at $7,500 per year for tuition use only, to the student’s institution of choice. Awarded to students with strong academic qualifications and a commitment to the environmental field. Student can choose any major, and are required to carry 25 percent of their undergraduate course work in subjects directly related to the environment. JFK Profile in Courage Essay Contest
Deadline: Jan. 12th
One winner will receive $5,000, 2nd place receives $1,000, and 5 finalists will receive $500 each. Applicants must submit a 700-1000 word essay describing how an elected official demonstrated political courage by addressing an issue at the local, state or national level. It is strongly suggested that applicants visit www.jfkcontest.org and refer to Contest Information, Writing Tips, Prepare Your Essay, and Citing Sources and Bibliographies for more information. Students may submit their essay online or by mail. All students must submit a registration form online for student and school information.

Kaplan/NEWSWEEK “My Turn” Essay
Deadline: Feb. 1st
Eight winners will receive $1,000, Second place will receive $2,000, and First place will receive $5,000. Each student must complete the official entry form and submit the form together with 2 copies of an original essay (500-1000 words) on a topic of the student’s choice, where the student shares her opinion, experience or personal feeling. The essay must have a title. Students can enter at www.kaptest.com/essay or receive more information at www.school.newsweek.com/about/resources/myturn2008/rules.php You may also receive an entry form in guidance to apply by mail.

McKelvey Foundation “Entrepreneurial Scholarship”
Deadline: Jan. 15th
The McKelvey Foundation is awarding $40,000 Scholarships to young entrepreneurs who have started their own businesses. Winners will enjoy being part of a larger entrepreneurial networking community and will be given the opportunity to meet with other scholars during their summer program. National Co-op Scholarship Program
Deadline: Feb. 15th
Merit co-op scholarships of $6,000 each, renewable up to $30,000 per University criteria. The following schools are participating this year in the program: Drexel U., Johnson And Wales U., Kettering U., C.W. Post Campus of Long Island U., Northeastern U., Pace U., Rochester Institute of Tech., U. of Cincinnati, U. of Toledo, and Wentworth Institute of Technology. High School GPA of 3.5 (B+) or better. Submit application form online or by mail and a typed, one-page essay describing why you have chosen to pursue a college cooperative education program. The National Italian American Foundation (NEW)
Deadline: Mar. 6th
NIAF is awarding scholarships ranging between $2,500-$10,000. Students must have Italian American heritage or plan on majoring in or minoring in Italian language, Italian studies or related field. Applications can only be submitted online. Must include teacher evaluation form, official transcript and FAFSA form. Student must have GPA of 3.5 or higher. www.niaf.org/scholarship/about.asp

National MS Society Scholarship Program
Deadline: Jan. 15th
Available for high school seniors who have MS or who have a parent with MS. Scholarships range between $1,000-$3,000. Last year, 332 scholarships were awarded for a total of $700,440. Applications available in guidance or at www.nationalmssociety.org Winners will be notified by early June.

National Pease Essay Contest
Deadline: Feb. 1st
$10,000, $5,000, $2,500 and 53 $1,000 awards. You must submit 4 copies of essay, student registration form and coordinator form. For forms, essay requirements and specifics, submission checklists, sample of winning essay and more visit guidance or go to www.usip.org/npec

Patrick Kerr Skateboard Scholarship (NEW)
Deadline: Apr. 10th
One $5000 scholarship and three $1000 scholarships will be awarded to a skateboarder with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Completed applications must be mailed and included specific information, essay, two letters of recommendation, transcript and information relevant to your skateboard activism. Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship
Deadline: May 1st
The Phillips Scholarship awards range from $3,000-$10,000 yearly (they awarded almost $2 Million to MA students for the 2007-2008 school year!!!) and are renewable for up to four years. Student must have a GPA 3.0 or higher and qualify financially. Read the most up-to-date information about the criteria and procedures to apply for the scholarship at www.phillips-scholarship.org Along with official transcript, evaluation form, recommendations and essays, students are required to submit their Student Aid Report (SAR) and most recent financial aid award letter.

Ron Brown Scholar Program
Deadline: Jan 9th
A minimum of ten students will be designated Ron Brown Scholars and will receive $10,000 annually for four years, for a total of $40,000. Applicants must be Black or African-American and demonstrate academic achievement, exhibit leadership, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. Sam Walton Community Scholarship (NEW)
Deadline: Jan. 14th
Walmart corporate giving is awarding 4 scholarships ranging from $1,000-$10,000 to eligible students. Eligibility requirements and deadlines vary so visit www.walmartfoundation.org and click on “read more” under Features- Scholarships. Applicants may apply, view needed documentation, and find answers to questions online. Some are for Walmart employees and dependants and some are not.

Shaw-Worth Memorial Scholarship (NEW)
Deadline: Mar. 17th
A $2,000 scholarship will be given to a New England student who has made a meaningful contribution to animal protection. There is no form to fill out. Applications should be written in letter form and include narrative of student’s achievements in animal protection, as well as discussion of your attitude toward animals. Documentation of activities cited, 3 recommendations and a description of future plans for humane work are required. Make sure to include applicants home address and phone number. Simon Youth Foundation Community Scholarship (NEW)
Deadline: Jan. 31st
Simon Youth Foundation is giving away up to 198 Simon mall awards, 8 Community/Lifestyle Center awards, and 8 Chelsea Premium Outlet awards for $1500 and eight scholarships of $2500. Students will be selected on the basis of financial need, academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community involvement, honors, work experience, statement of goals, and an outside appraisal. Unusual personal or family circumstances will also be given consideration. Applications available online at www.simonyouth.scholarshipamerica.org

USA Funds-Access to Education Scholarship (NEW)
Deadline: Feb. 15th
USA funds will be awarding up to $6,000 scholarships worth $3.2 million nationwide. Applicant must have annual adjusted gross family income of $35,000 or less and be a US citizen. Awards will be based on past academic performance and future potential, school and community activities, work experience, aspirations and goals, and unusual personal or family circumstances. Applications will be accepted online beginning Dec. 15, 2007 at www.usafunds.org or www.scholarshipamerica.org/usafunds

Vegetarian Resource Group Scholarship
Deadline: Feb. 20th
The Vegetarian Resource Group will award two $5,000 scholarships to high school students who have promoted vegetarianism in their schools and/or communities. Applications and information available in guidance department or at www.vrg.org/student/scholar.htm

Young Entrepreneur Foundation (NEW)
Deadline: Feb. 11th
$5,000-$10,000 awarded to students who demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit and initiative; an officially established business is not a requirement. Students are strongly encouraged to apply online at www.goonline.cc access key- NFIB. A Few things to remember…
*Let guidance know of all decisions from colleges- good and not so good.

*You must give guidance a copy of any and all scholarship award letters, including grants, you receive. This is for all colleges, not just the one you chose to attend.

*Send thank you notes to everyone who interviewed you and to anyone else who has been particularly helpful.
